Excerpt from Director’s Note:
“We begin the play with a dance and end it with an explosion of hope. In between these joyous moments, we experience fear, hatred, young love, and grief with Zoila as she takes a journey inward, learning truths about her family, her ancestors, her history, and herself. The richly woven historical tapestry and the vibrant cultural specificity is part of what drew me to this play.
The last words the playwright has written are (unspoken) stage directions: ‘the Journey Continues…’ It is my hope, nay prediction, that the journey will continue with you. And if I may, there should definitely be some dancing along the way.”
Press Quotes:
“For a little over two hours, the play addresses the generational scars left by Spanish colonization… a journey of self acceptance through the discovery of the value of her roots… themes about intersectionality enter mainstream conversations.”
