Excerpt from Director’s Note:
“As I look back onto the history of women onstage, I find a common thread in how many women relied on dance and movement to share their experiences before they had an equal role in scripted theater. I took this as my cue to create a movement-based chorus that would help tell the story of Antigone. In the spirit of this production, I took choreographic inspiration both from past and present sources. You will see a variety of movement styles from early women’s movement history, such as Delsarte system and synchronized swimming, and inspiration from iconic figures of dance, like Martha Graham and Yvonne Rainer, to brand-new movement created by a student choreographer and the actors onstage. By drawing upon historical and modern influences throughout this production, I hope that Antigone inspires you to see how far we’ve come as a society and how far we still need to go.”
“Directed by Yasmine Jahanmir, Antigone used costumes ranging from different eras in history and also incorporated an all-female cast… switching up the norms… Jahanmir took choreography inspiration both from past and present sources like the Delsarte system and synchronized swimming… further celebrating the characters’ feminine power.”
