Excerpt from Director’s Note:
“As we built this production of Cabaret, we wanted to speak to the moment we were living in. What did it look like to be open and daring in terms of sex, gender, and sexuality now? How could we embody dangerous political rifts that felt relevant to today? Due to circumstances out of our control, we had no lighting or scenic support and so we worked as a community to borrow tables and clothes, make decorations out of recycled materials, and use everyday lights in a theatrical way. And so, as we re-tell this story, we used both our historical knowledge and our present circumstances to develop a show that challenged the creative team, the cast, and hopefully you, the audience, to see Cabaret anew.”
Press Quotes:
“Thanks to director Yassi Jahanmir’s inventive use of the venue and the cast’s electric boldness… the distinction between ‘in here’ and ‘out there’ is shattered before scene one… asking us as we leave the theater to consider what we're trying to dance away today.” — Peregrine Hart, The Nevada Sagebrush
“Not the usual song and dance… Jahanmir opted for a DIY-style production that’s raw, unfiltered—and literally dark… floor lights create a stark, seamy atmosphere, giving faces a harsh appearance and casting eerie shadows… a black-box theater that feels as if it might be a bombed-out, prewar wreck.” — Jessica Santina, Reno News & Review
