“I was hired to make a digital play by a theatre company in Michigan and chose to resurrect an early American female playwright: Alice Emma Ives, from Detroit Michigan, known as the ‘Voice of the 1890s’ She was wildly popular in her time for her articles and her plays and then almost entirely forgotten. The most thrilling part for me as a director was reconstructing the historical dance that was part of the script. Early American plays, especially by women, are nearly impossible to find. I wanted to leave a tangible trace of this formative era.”
